Treasure Island Summary

The events of the novel take place approximately in the middle of the eighteenth century. Jim Hawkins lives with his parents in a small town. Jim’s father runs the Admiral Benbow Inn on the seashore.

One day, a new guest arrives at the inn — a former sailor named Billy Bones. After some time, strange visitors begin coming to see him. The first is a sailor known as Black Dog, an old acquaintance of Billy’s. They quarrel, and Bones wounds Black Dog, who manages to escape. Later, Billy is visited by the terrifying blind beggar Pew, who gives him the black spot — a threatening pirate warning issued to leaders who have acted against the interests of the crew. After receiving the black spot, Billy decides to leave the inn immediately, but he suddenly dies of an apoplectic stroke.

Jim and his mother, to whom Billy owes money for his stay, search the dead sailor and his belongings. At the bottom of his chest, they discover money and a packet of papers. The documents reveal that Bones had been the first mate aboard the ship of the famous pirate Captain Flint and possessed a map of the island where Flint had buried his treasure.

Jim barely manages to take Flint’s papers before Blind Pew and his men can seize them. They attack the Admiral Benbow Inn in an attempt to obtain the map. Bones, Black Dog, Blind Pew, and the others are all former members of the Walrus, the pirate ship commanded by Captain Flint. Suddenly, a group of royal revenue officers comes to Jim and his mother’s aid. Blind Pew is accidentally killed, while the remaining pirates flee in haste. Their escape is covered by the crew of a pirate lugger carrying their accomplices.

Jim gives the documents and map to Doctor Livesey and Squire Trelawney. The wealthy Trelawney begins preparing an expedition and instructs Blandly, a businessman, to arrange a suitable vessel for the journey — the schooner Hispaniola.

Captain Smollett, the captain of the Hispaniola, expresses serious doubts about the reliability of the crew and especially distrusts his first mate, the sailing master Arrow. However, he gives in to Doctor Livesey’s persuasion and Trelawney’s leniency. The Hispaniola sets sail from Bristol for Treasure Island.

During the voyage, Jim manages to overhear a secret conversation between a sailor named Dick, the “second” boatswain Israel Hands, and the cook, John Silver, a one-legged man known by the nickname Barbecue, or Long John. Jim discovers that most of the crew hired by Trelawney are former members of Flint’s crew and that Silver is the leader of a conspiracy whose goal is to seize the treasure.

Jim realizes that there are far more pirates aboard the ship than honest men. Horrified, he hears that Silver and his gang intend to kill all the honest members of the expedition. The pirates pressure Silver to attack the peaceful men as soon as possible, but Silver understands that the gang will not be able to operate the ship on its own because none of the pirates has the necessary training.

Silver’s plan is to wait until the squire, doctor, and the others find the treasure and load it onto the ship. He also intends to wait until the experienced Captain Smollett has brought the ship “at least as far as the trade winds” and only then kill all the heroes.

Meanwhile, the ship approaches Treasure Island. Silver sees that his plan is beginning to fall apart. The pirates practically ignore the captain’s orders openly and behave aggressively. Jim tells the captain, the squire, and the doctor what he has overheard. The heroes realize that they are trapped.

The captain decides to ease the tension and suggests that the crew go ashore. His plan is to catch the pirates left aboard the ship by surprise, attack them, and seize the Hispaniola. The captain’s plan would have worked if Jim had not gone ashore in one of the boats with the pirates.

The captain therefore proposes a new plan. Looking at the map, he sees that there is an old abandoned fort on the island. He suggests moving there and defending themselves on land. The heroes gather gunpowder, weapons, and provisions, get into a boat, and leave the ship.

Caught off guard by these actions, the pirates prepare to fire on the boat. The boat carries the captain, the doctor, the squire, the squire’s servants, and Abraham Gray, a crew member whom the pirates had tried but failed to win over to their side. Hands attempts to sink the boat by firing a cannon at it. The squire manages to shoot one of the pirates.

Soon, the heroes reach the fort and take up positions inside it. The captain assigns everyone their posts. The heroes are prepared for a long siege.

Meanwhile, Jim reaches the shore with the pirates and runs away. After some time, he witnesses the murder of Tom, an honest sailor, by John Silver. From a wild cry, it becomes clear that another honest sailor, Alan, has also been killed by the pirates.

Jim runs on without knowing where he is going and encounters a man dressed in goatskins who behaves very strangely. The man tells him that his name is Ben Gunn and that he is a former repentant pirate. Ben asks Jim to arrange a meeting with the doctor. Jim sees the English flag flying and hurries toward his friends.

The next day, the heroes see Silver approaching the fort under a white flag. The captain comes out to negotiate. Silver offers to give him the map in exchange for the pirates leaving the honest men alone and sending the first passing ship to rescue them.

The captain firmly refuses Silver’s offer and warns him that the negotiations are over. Silver leaves, threatening to “blow up this old blockhouse like a barrel of gunpowder.” Soon, the pirates begin their assault on the fort.

The forces are unequal, but the heroes fight bravely. After losing several men, the pirates are forced to retreat. However, the honest men also suffer losses: the squire’s servants are killed, and the captain is wounded.

Jim passes Ben Gunn’s request to the doctor. Unable to bear remaining inside the fort, Jim takes a supply of biscuits and ventures out. He reaches the shore, sees the Hispaniola, and decides to find out what is happening aboard the ship.

Jim discovers Ben Gunn’s boat, made from pieces of wood and goatskins. After waiting for the tide to go out, he paddles toward the ship. However, Jim does not know that Silver is approaching the ship from the other side.

Long John discovers that the men left to guard the ship, Hands and O’Brien, are dead drunk. After strictly ordering them to keep watch over the vessel, Silver leaves in his boat.

Jim reaches the ship, pushes his boat away, and climbs aboard using the anchor rope. Morning comes. Jim finds the wounded Hands and the dead O’Brien. Under Hands’s direction, Jim brings the ship to the North Anchorage, so no one knows where the vessel is now located.

Hands attempts to attack Jim. In the struggle, Jim accidentally kills Hands. The Hispaniola runs aground, but at least it is now safely hidden.

Overjoyed, Jim returns to the fort, only to discover pirates there instead of his friends. Jim becomes their hostage. Soon, the doctor arrives to visit. He examines and treats the pirates suffering from fever and asks Silver for permission to speak with Jim.

Silver allows Jim to talk to the doctor after taking his word that he will not escape. The doctor urges Jim to run away, but Jim refuses. Instead, he tells the doctor where the ship is hidden.

Silver’s behavior, which clearly suggests that he is playing a double game, angers the pirates. They give him the black spot and demand a new election for captain. However, Silver explains his actions.

It turns out that he has made an agreement with the captain. In exchange for the map, provisions, and the fort, the pirates allowed the heroes to leave. Silver and the others do not understand why this was necessary.

Silver refuses to kill Jim, explaining to the pirates that they cannot kill a hostage. Silver remains captain, and his authority only grows stronger.

The next day, the pirates take Jim with them and set out to search for the treasure. Soon, they come across a skeleton. Silver realizes that it is a compass — one of Flint’s jokes.

Suddenly, the pirates hear Flint’s voice. Terrified, they stop and cannot go any farther. Silver convinces everyone that the voice belongs to a living person because they all heard an echo. Soon, the pirates recognize the voice as Ben Gunn’s.

The pirates continue on their way and discover a huge pit that has clearly already been dug. They realize that the treasure has already been found, and that this is the reason the captain gave up the map.

The pirates attempt to attack Silver, but he proves to be stronger and more agile. In addition, the captain, the doctor, the squire, and Ben Gunn attack the pirates from ambush.

It turns out that Ben had found the treasure long before and moved it to his cave. For several days, the heroes carry the treasure to the ship. Soon, they sail away from the island, leaving the three surviving pirates behind.

Silver manages to disappear in one of the ports, taking part of the treasure with him. Ben Gunn helps him do this because he is deathly afraid of Silver.

After returning to England, the heroes become wealthy. Only Ben Gunn spends all his share of the treasure within a few days. The squire hires him as a gardener.
