The Prodigal Son Summary
Once upon a time, a father lived with his two sons. The younger son did not want to do the hard work alongside his father and older brother, so he asked his father to give him half of his inheritance. The father agreed and divided his possessions between his children.
The younger son took the money and left his father’s home. Far away from his family, he spent everything he had on partying and immoral pleasures.
When poverty struck, the young man found work as a swineherd. However, he did not earn enough money to buy food and began to starve. He was even willing to eat the food given to the pigs, but he was forbidden to do so.
Driven by desperation, he decided to return to his father, although he understood that he had deeply wronged him and was no longer worthy of being called his son. His suffering was so great, however, that he was ready to return home even as a hired servant.
When the prodigal son arrived home, he fell to his knees before his father and confessed that he was not worthy to be called his son. But his father was overjoyed that his boy had returned safe and sound. He dressed his son in the finest clothes and held a celebration to mark his child’s return to the family home.
The older brother was displeased with his father’s actions. While the younger son had been enjoying himself, he had worked hard beside their father, yet no one had ever organized such a feast for him.
But the wise old man replied, “Everything I have is yours, my son! You are always with me, and we should rejoice because your brother, who had gone astray, has returned and was not lost!”
Through this act, the wise father taught his children that the most important things in life are mercy, generosity, forgiveness, and love for one’s neighbor.
