Orpheus and Eurydice Summary

In Thrace, in northern Greece, lived a singer named Orpheus. Eurydice was his wife, but their happiness did not last long.

One day, Orpheus and Eurydice were in the forest. Eurydice was walking through the woods when she stepped into a snake’s nest, and the snake bit her. Death carried Eurydice away to the underworld.

Orpheus was overcome with grief. He withdrew from other people and spent his days alone, wandering through the forests and pouring his sorrow into his songs. There was such power in those mournful melodies that the trees seemed to leave their places and gather around the singer. Animals came out of their dens, birds abandoned their nests, and even stones moved closer. Everything listened as he mourned the woman he loved.

Eventually, Orpheus decided to enter the realm of the dead himself.

For a long time, he searched for an entrance to the underworld. At last, in the deep cave of Tainaron, he found a stream that flowed into the underground river Styx. Following the stream, Orpheus descended deep beneath the earth and reached the banks of the Styx. Beyond that river began the realm of the dead.

Charon, the ferryman of the dead, came to carry the newly arrived souls across the river but refused to take Orpheus into his boat. Orpheus then began to sing, and Charon obediently carried him to the opposite shore.

Orpheus reached the palace of Hades, the ruler of the underworld. The fearsome Hades sat high upon a golden throne, with his beautiful queen, Persephone, beside him. Orpheus saw many strange and extraordinary mythical creatures there.

The singer approached the throne of the gloomy ruler and sang even more passionately. He sang of his love for Eurydice. Everyone was captivated by his music. Then Hades raised his head and asked:

“What are you seeking, singer, in the realm of the dead? Tell me what you want, and I promise to grant your request.”

Orpheus begged Hades to return Eurydice to him.

“Let it be as you ask,” Hades said to Orpheus. “I will return Eurydice to you. You may take her with you back to the upper world, into the light of day. But you must promise me one thing: you must not see her until you have reached the world above. Do not look back and do not look at her. If you turn around, you will lose her forever!”

Then Hades commanded Eurydice to follow Orpheus.

Orpheus set out toward the exit from the realm of the dead. At last, the darkness ahead began to give way to light, and the way out to the world above was near. Anxiety gripped Orpheus’s heart: was Eurydice really there?

“Where are you, Eurydice? Let me look at you!”

For a moment, he saw the beloved shadow, the dear and beautiful face. But it lasted only an instant. Eurydice’s shadow immediately slipped away, vanished, and melted into the darkness.

For a long time, Orpheus sat alone on the bank of the Styx and waited. No one came.

He had no choice but to return to the world above and go on living. But he could never forget his one true love, Eurydice. Her memory remained alive in his heart and in his songs.
